In the 19th century the C&O Canal provided jobs and opportunities for people throughout the Potomac River Valley. Today the canal provides a place to recreate and enjoy nature.  When the C&O Canal was built, people had industry, commerce, empire building, and opening up the West in mind. Nowdays, most people come to the canal to to relax, learn, and enjoy themselves.
